Basildon is a true success story. Part of the first generation of post-war New Towns in 1949, its population’s grown to 180,000 from 30,000 in the last 70 years. It’s also a place that global companies including Ford, New Holland Agriculture and Konica Minolta have chosen to base their operations – and that’s just three of the 7,000 companies that are currently thriving here, employing some 80,000 people and responsible for an ongoing stream of new jobs. In fact, Basildon has the largest economy in Essex, with new start-ups being created faster than anywhere else in the county.
As well as this thriving business scene, Basildon borough is home to a number of villages nestled in picturesque countryside, surrounding five major towns. These are Billericay, Laindon, Pitsea, Wickford and Basildon itself.
All areas are served by excellent transport links, as you can see below:
35 minutes from central London
Major road links and rail lines to two London termini
Three airports within 40 minutes
The nearest town to the London Gateway Port – just eight miles away.
Fast forward 70 years, and it’s time for a new chapter. We want to revive the ambition that created our first generation New Town. The goal is to give everyone who lives, works and learns here a brighter future that’s full of opportunities and prosperity. Our area’s alive with possibilities and has all the ingredients to be one of the most successful and desirable places in the southeast.
That vision extends beyond the boundaries of our borough. We’re looking outward, collaborating with our partners in the Association of South Essex Local Authorities (ASELA) to develop and deliver a vision for South Essex up to 2050, promoting healthy growth for all our communities, regardless of individual local authority boundaries.
Realising our vision is not without challenge. However, by focusing our resources and ambition, and allocating resources to priorities, we can create a place that’s as diverse and special as the people who call it home.
For those who choose to help us, there’s an exciting journey ahead. One that comes with the chance to achieve a goal that’s game-changing for thousands of people. It’s also one that brings rewards for your hard work and talent: generous benefits that go beyond the norm. They include car allowance, private healthcare and for some, help with relocation.
